This unit extends preservice teacher’s prior understanding of theory, research and practical approaches to language acquisition, development and cultural competence in early childhood education. Grounded in theoretical, pedagogical and sociological constructions of plurilingualism, the unit investigates dual language development, plurilingual pedagogies, responsive and inclusive practice. Preservice teachers will critically evaluate policy, principles and early learning frameworks underpinning effective plurilingual education. They will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, dispositions to support the learning and development of linguistically diverse children and their families. They will engage with real-world practices through critical case study analysis, guest speaker presentations and community excursions and reflect on their values, dispositions and evolving identities as linguistically inclusive early childhood teachers
